Intel®, a global technology leader, designs and manufactures processors and hardware for a wide range of devices. The P1272 Tool Installation project at Intel’s Leixlip, Ireland campus was a major initiative, valued at €3 billion and executed over 36 months.
The project involved the precise installation and commissioning of approximately 700 advanced manufacturing tools across Intel’s semiconductor fabrication facility. These tools were installed in highly specialized areas, including Lithography, Diffusion, Wet Etch, Dry Etch, Labs, C4, Defect Metrology, Implants, Planarization, Thin Film Dielectrics, Thin Film Metals, and Critical Material Supply (CMS). Each environment required uniquely configured tools and operated under strict conditions, making the project both technically demanding and logistically complex.
To deliver the project successfully, 15 diverse teams worked in close coordination. In parallel, an intensive training program certified 1,500 partners in specialized installation methods.
Lean Touch Solutions was responsible for delivering tailored Lean Construction services. Our objective was clear: support the timely, safe, and high-quality installation of 700 complex tools.
Given the project’s size and complexity, Lean principles were essential. We focused on streamlining workflows, minimizing waste, reducing delays, and enhancing coordination across teams. This was achieved by applying robust planning tools, implementing visual management systems, and fostering a culture of proactive problem-solving throughout all installation phases.
We began by collaborating with Intel’s leadership, key managers, and specialist Trade Partners to co-develop a detailed Lean Construction Strategy. This early engagement was crucial to adapting Lean principles to the unique needs of semiconductor tool installation.
A key success factor was securing strong buy-in from Intel, senior management, and all Trade Partners. Their endorsement ensured that Lean practices were adopted consistently across the workforce.
We followed Lean Touch Solutions’ standardized implementation framework, tailored to suit the project’s complexity. This structured approach enabled us to:
Scale Lean practices across 15 collaborating teams
Train and certify 1,500 partners in consistent, high-quality methods
Maintain efficient workflows and strict quality control
Help deliver the €3 billion project on schedule
The P1272 project was one of the most technically diverse and logistically challenging equipment installation efforts in Intel’s global portfolio. Through close collaboration, disciplined Lean execution, and a shared commitment to excellence, Lean Touch Solutions played a key role in helping Intel meet its ambitious objectives at Leixlip.
