What set this project apart was its incredibly fast 6-month construction schedule, paired with ambitious sustainability goals. Achieving an A1 Building Energy Rating (BER) and BREEAM Excellent certification, the facility has become one of Europe’s most energy-efficient logistics centres.

Our Project Scope (Construction)

Lean Touch Solutions played a key role in the success of this distribution centre construction project. Our Lean Construction services were tailored to help meet Lidl’s threefold challenge: deliver at speed, meet high sustainability standards, and coordinate complex logistics and mechanical systems.

Our involvement focused on the following:

  • Optimizing end-to-end construction workflows from groundworks to refrigeration systems.
  • Enabling real-time collaboration across 25 specialist teams.
  • Integrating Lean waste elimination strategies to reduce time, material use, and energy consumption.
  • Embedding quality checks directly into construction activities to ensure “first-time-right” execution.

Project Approach : Lean Principles from Ground to Completion

Lean Construction Strategy

Our project approach was grounded in a holistic, Lean strategy that aligned with Lidl’s ambitious delivery goals. We collaborated closely with Lidl, the main contractor, M&E subcontractors, sustainable design consultants, and BREEAM assessors to implement Lean from the outset.

  • The Last Planner® System: Used to manage the compressed build timeline with accurate scheduling and team accountability.
  • Value Stream Mapping: Applied to streamline the entire construction process and identify delays before they occurred.
  • Off-site Prefabrication: Accelerated construction with consistent, high-quality components such as insulated wall panels and M&E modules.
  • Green Lean Integration: Sustainable construction methods aligned with both BREEAM and BER standards.

The success of the Lidl distribution centre construction depended on full buy-in from Lidl’s leadership, project management, and 25 trade partners. We trained 60 key partners in Lean Construction to ensure consistency across teams.

Our standardised Lean Implementation model, adapted for this large-scale logistics project, ensured that Lean principles weren’t just adopted—they were embedded into every stage. The result was a state-of-the-art, BREEAM Excellent and A1-rated distribution centre delivered on time and to the highest standards.
